Cisco is out of the WiMAX market

Three years ago, Cisco had set its sights on WiMAX technology, more specifically on 2007, when the it acquired a company that manufactures equipment based on this wireless technology, Navini Networks. But according to official information, Cisco will no longer be involved in the development of WiMAX-based stations because now it prefers to be centralized in the IP networks.

The company spokesman Jim Brady said that the decision to depart from this business was taken after an analysis of the situation, although there will be a support plan to carry out the transition for customers from one technology to another.
The point is that this technology would not only lose a player like Cisco, but that apparently is losing ground in general against Long Term Evolution, commonly known as LTE. Another could also migrate to this technology is Clearwire, an operator is currently working with WiMAX but in a couple of years it will be part of the LTE group.
In all this, how important is the confrontation that remains between the two wireless technologies, with LTE as that is gaining ground against its rival. An IDC study reported that investment in equipment will also have LTE as a leader, with over one hundred mobile operators based on this technology.
As a demonstration of the evolving architecture of 3G to 4G, LTE will be a fundamental element that refers to the mobile Internet, with features such as the transmission of high resolution data over 300 meters. With wide bandwidth capability, the technology has been planned fourth generation for compatibility with previous mobile technologies.
This doesn´t means that WiMAX has fallen. This technology, which has 30 kilometers of coverage and a speed of up to 10MB, is very valuable to provide broadband services in regions of low population, as rural areas or those where costs per user are very high. Therefore, over the years and then pass this frenzy between one or the other, more likely is that more than rivals become complementary technologies.
